{"id":984,"date":"2023-02-06T15:28:31","date_gmt":"2023-02-06T15:28:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/generation-global-overhaul.local\/stories\/margherita-italy\/"},"modified":"2025-08-11T07:59:37","modified_gmt":"2025-08-11T11:59:37","slug":"margherita-italy","status":"publish","type":"stories","link":"https:\/\/www.generation.org\/stories\/margherita-italy\/","title":{"rendered":"Margherita | Italy"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4><strong>Beginning a new life in March of 2020<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Margherita graduated university with a degree in Civil Engineering in March of 2020, right as Italy was shocked by the first waves of the coronavirus pandemic. As the country imposed strict lockdown measures and unemployment skyrocketed, a fresh graduate in need of training and extra support was exceedingly unlikely to secure an opportunity in an unprecedentedly scarce job market.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She took on odd jobs here and there, such as babysitting, but felt increasingly discouraged about her prospects for the future.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Margherita became locked in what felt like an endless and futile search, sending resumes around, \u201cbut without much expectation of hearing back,\u201d as she put it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After two years, she was still unemployed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Trying something new<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Just as the hopes of starting a real career began to fade, Margherita accidentally stumbled upon Generation\u2019s ad on her bank\u2019s website. She saw an offering for a bootcamp in Java. She had taken a computer course in college and really loved it, so she thought, why not give this a try?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At first, Margherita was disheartened that the classes were all online. She had never taken an online course before, and didn\u2019t think she could learn much. \u201cI was wrong!\u201d she told us, laughing. Not only did she ace all the technical skills in the end, but she also made lasting connections with other learners that have bolstered her since in both her personal and professional life (almost all of her classmates are also in new careers or pursuing additional education as part of their new pathway, she told us).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She later reflected, as she started her first job, how all the things she learned in the program fully clicked into place. \u201cI was using all the skills I learned from Generation, every day. One area Generation focused a lot on was around soft skills. I found this extremely important, because that\u2019s something they don\u2019t teach you anywhere else,\u201d she told us.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Her career begins at Accenture, a month later<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After graduating from <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/italy.generation.org\/programs\/java-developer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Generation Italy\u2019s Developer<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> program in 2023, Margherita was connected by Generation, together with her classmates, to several companies. She eventually accepted an offer to work as Application Development Analyst at Accenture. This role in fact goes beyond coding, and is a higher-level project management and design role. She told us she was quite impressed to have even been considered by \u201csuch an important company.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cSeeing my paycheck for the first time was quite emotional. I\u2019ve never seen a paycheck like that before.\u201d She is currently saving up to buy her own home in Rome. There is tremendous growth in her new career, in her new company, and in what she expects to earn moving forward.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI\u2019m on a great path. I love my work. My colleagues are all amazing. I\u2019m earning. And I\u2019m definitely a lot happier now,\u201d she tells us.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Where is Margherita now?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Margherita spent nearly three years as an Application Development Analyst before being promoted to Custom Software Engineering Analyst at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.accenture.com\/be-en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Accenture<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. In June 2024, she secured a position at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eng.it\/en\/group\/companies\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Engineering Group<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as a Cloud Operation and Governance Specialist.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Beginning a new life in March of 2020 Margherita graduated university with a degree in Civil Engineering in March of 2020, right as Italy was shocked by the first waves of the coronavirus pandemic.
